Cinema tonight The film "Tower Heist" will be showing tonight (in English) Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd at 18:45 at Nyon cinema  starring Eddie Murphy, Ben Stiller and Casey Affleck. See trailer here on U Tube Quick synopsis: When a group of hard working guys find out they've fallen victim to a wealthy business man's Ponzi scheme, they conspire to rob his high-rise residence. Also at the same cinema tonight as a complete contrast, the documentary "Mediums - from one world to another" will be shown at 20:30. The documentary asks the question "Is there life after death?" To prove it, a spiritual healer takes up the challenge of medium ship sessions in front of the camera to clients and scientists who don't believe in it. Documentary in French. "New Moon" Fondue Evening" This Friday the 25th November there will be a "New Moon" fondue evening by the lake from 19:00 onwards organised by the "Bains de 3 Jetees". Reservation required see site This voluntary association organises many events throughout the year down by the lake ( see previous post here ) and it also runs the lovely weekend café and sauna. If you have never been here , why not give it a try? there are deckchairs to sit out on the top terrace (with warm woollen blankets provided). If the weather is really inclement, there is a small indoor café with a woodburning stove to warm up in- Hot drinks and cake on the menu.  Clothing needed for asylum seekers A reader has sent in the following request: " I am helping to collect winter clothing and other supplies for the asylum seekers in Nyon and Gland. We are looking for clothing in good condition: jeans, trousers, shirts, pullovers, warm jackets, shoes, socks, belts, hats, gloves underclothes (undershirts could be used but underpants should be new), backpacks, book-packs, brief-cases, wallets will all be gratefully received. There are about 130 young men right now (most aged between 18 and 30), with more continually arriving, there's a real and growing need for warm, winter clothes - especially as the Gland group has to be away from their centre during the day.  Thank you so much for your support!   Please email christine.carey at iprolink.ch  More jazz in Nyon this Friday at the 1306 club . Black boots, black make up and lots of black clothing were in abundance at the first night of Caribana 2015 as Marilyn Manson fans arrived early at the lakeside venue to get a good spot in the crowd to see the headline act.   Wednesday night (a sell out night) was hot with clear blue skies, a perfect start to the festival. The music was mainly dedicated to rock, with performances from UK band Kill it Kid, John Dear from Lausanne, John J. Presley from the UK and other bands, both on the main stage and the lake stage. This year a lot of the grassy areas of Caribana are covered over with synthetic tiles, which should help in times of rain, although the forecast is looking good for the next few days. All the usual Caribana food stalls with a choices of food from various countries are back again this year, including the famous "Miss Caïpirinha" bar. S ee list of bars here . Autumn is back, which means going back to school for the young ones (not much fun), but also the new cultural season for all venues in Nyon (loads more fun). We are lucky to have a rich cultural offer in Nyon, between the theatre and concerts at l'Usine à Gaz, the Conservatoire's classical concerts and La Parenthèse's edgy musical discoveries. Here are a few shows coming up in Nyon. Usine à Gaz Swiss band Adieu Gary Cooper Friday the 12 th , Saturday 13 th 20 th , Motel Tour US Car Show. La Parenthèse The venue located in a reconverted wine cellar hosts free concerts twice a week. Their program is eclectic and made of the best of the new bands on the independent scene, from rock to psych-pop and folk. A lot of the bands who play in this venue then go on to play at Paléo and get quite famous. Look out for a number of collaborations with festivals and other venues during the year, which will bring some diversity and fun to the town. You can get a taste of the first of these collaborations on Thursday the 11 th of september with American band Quilt 's psychedelic grooves and pop harmonies, presented by La Batie festival , a contemporary music and theatre festival taking place until the 13 th of September. Le Pulse Saturday 13 th , 18 th Dan Sartain , DJ-set on the 19 th . The Besnard Lakes , Godspeed You Black Emperor among others, are on on Saturday the 20 th . 26 th of September Zatar, at 20:30.

Monday 1st August is Swiss National Day, and it will be celebrated right across the area tomorrow. Time to get out the bunting and the flags! Les Hustlers -   The following short film review is by Suzy Nelson-Pollard. It’s that one week of the year where the citizens of Nyon and cinemaphiles from far and wide, get the opportunity to travel across the world, from the comfort of the cinemas of Vision du Réel. Screening  Tuesday 29th April at 1600 at the Capitole 2, the film “Les Hustlers” directed by Amah Egome, shows the lives of fishermen living in the Katanga ghetto of Lomé, Togo. Living in shantytowns with their families, the men complement to their fishing revenues by doing odd jobs, often illegal, such as stealing barrels of gasoline. Chanting their way through the hard physical labour of fishing, saying prayers before drinking deep shots of alcohol, and singing along to UB40 songs by candlelight whilst smoking weed, the men find ways to get through their days. They complain about having to supplement their jobs illegally, and how they are treated and ostracised by authorities. “I am a conscientious delinquent” one man says. Meanwhile the feisty women of the bidonville (shanty town) go about their daily chores, lamenting the bad company that their husbands keep. Children chase each other around the slum, sulky teenagers refuse to go to school and arguments break out. Often observational films with no particular message can be dull and slow, but others give you the opportunity to travel, as a non-judgmental fly on the wall. Les Hustlers gives you that chance, to snoop at the lives of a community living on the margins of society, without feeling that the scenes were staged or that conclusions have to be drawn. End of season event for the Roulotte  On Saturday 15th October the Roulotte will close its doors for the winter season. There will be a "boom"  (a dance), music and entertainment from 17:00 onwards. The Roulotte, the converted railway carriage behind Nyon station, has grown in popularity and has now become a favourite spot for Nyon residents and commuters to have an alfresco meal or an afterwork drink .  Above  - La Roulotte Indian Dance - Friday night There will be  a dance performance tonight Friday October 14th at the Theatre de Marens, Route de Stand 5 in Nyon. The performance is called  "A Journey to sacred sites through dance" and will be performed by senior students of the "Omkara school of Indian Classical Dance". Doors open at 18:30 , performance starts at 19:30 ends at 21:30. Price 40 chf to include Indian food and chai (children go free). Proceeds of this performance will go towards the conservation, management and restoration of Selected Sacred Natural sites in the Himalayas. There are lots activities planned at this festival see here for full details Australian band play in Nyon on the 22nd On Sat  22 October  Melbourne Aussie band  "True Live ", will be headlining at the Usine a Gaz in Nyon along with Swiss band "Tweek" for an evening of "hip hop- jazz and nu soul". This was  recorded on the Connectors in August this year with Dr Michelle Wright, the station's in house medical expert and the host of the "Connectors" (the Living in Nyon editor). The  Connectors are  a team of different nationalities (plus Swiss members!) and they discuss  all kinds of expatriate issues from relocation to culture shock, to language, and the fun news items about Switzerland. It is broadcast live just after 18:30 on a Thursday on WRS, repeated on Fridays on Sunday just after 12:30, or online at any time. The winter sauna has now been installed down by the lake and along with it, these colourful flags hanging above the water. Photo below: the sauna with a view of the lake Expatriate Fair T he  Léman Expat Fair will take place next Sunday from 11:00 - 17:00  at the Beaulieu in Lausanne.  Over 120 Swiss and international businesses and services  with experience in serving the English-speaking community . Now in its 4th year and covering the areas between Geneva and Montreux. Living in Nyon will have a stand at this fair so come and meet us! More details to follow. There is always an eclectic choice of music at  Paléo festival. Wednesday night's programming was a case in point. In the Village du Monde area of the festival, the Red Hot Chili Pipers got the whole tent dancing with their "bagpipes with attitude" show, shortly after, the Dublin band *Citi Mac entertained the folk in the Voyagers pub with their fiddles, singing and Irish dancing whilst at the same time, a massive crowd was rocking to the heavy metal sound of Iron Maiden  performing on the the Grand Scène. There's also an eclectic choice of food and venues for the festival goers, from the traditional Swiss Malakoff (eaten at a bench) to waitress service at a sit down restaurant in the field. Living in Nyon can highly recommend the sweet Welsh cakes from the Te Bach stall in the Village du Monde (see photos below). *Citi Mac will be performing every night in the Voyagers Pub at various times at the festival. Spring has finally sprung in Nyon and last Sunday locals, tourists (and lake birds !) were out and about in the sunny weather. Take a look at a selection of photos taken around the town at the week-end. Nyon and La Côte region were mentioned in the property section of the Financial Times on May 3rd, see article here, however one sentence in the article -  "prices for  property in Le Parc de la Serine, situated close to the town begin at CHF 338,000" is slightly misleading.  These new build apartments are not actually in Nyon but in the commune of Vich , approximately two kilometres away. Vich is in the district of Nyon but it is a commune and has a syndic (mayor) of its own.  Its residents are called "Les Vichois" "Les Vichoises". House Worth a lot .. The CHF 48 million house for sale in Prangins that is also mentioned in the article can be seen across the water from Nyon (see photo below). The original owner of the house was Jean-Philippe Worth, son of Charles Frederic Worth the fashion designer. Although the summer is coming to an end, it doesn't mean the end of rock music festivals as there is another festival just round the corner to look forward to. The Jval festival is a small three day rock music festival taking place on the 29, 30 and 31 August. The festival is set amongst the lovely Vaud vineyards in the terrain of  "Le domaine de Serreaux-Dessus" (near Begnins)  overlooking the lake. Acts include: Dead Bunny,  Evellin Trouble, Poni Hoax, Rootwords and the Block Notes, Oy, Féfé, Billie Bird, Kassette, Girls in Hawaii ,  and there will be a DJ at the end of each night's concerts.   Fully details of all the bands, access, parking, free navette bus and how to purchase ticket prices see here

On Tuesday night a new cinema club launched in Nyon with the aim of showing a variety of international films twice a month at 20:00 on a Monday night throughout the year, at the Capitole cinema in the heart of town.   The programme begins on the 10th October and continues through to 26th March 2012.  Andrea Bachmann-Helbling, club president spoke to Living in Nyon about the new club and the film choices the club has made to kick off the new season. Andreas - " We know there are lots of film fans here in the town, and Nyon is obviously already firmly on the map with its annual Spring documentary film festival  "Visions du Réel" .  However, we wanted to give film lovers the opportunity to see high quality films throughout the year, to offer debates after each film, hopefully those debates will continue in the bar downstairs afterwards!  We are beginning the season with a silent film called "The"Artist" on the 10th October (see description of this film at the end of this article below). Films from Korea to Sri Lanka to a Coen Brothers film There are six of us on the committee, we have had an interesting time and many discussions choosing the films for the programme, we all have different tastes.  Ultimately though we think we have come up with a good variety from around the world to suit everyone. Amongst the choice there is a film from Korea, a film from Switzerland, a Coen brothers film  ("The Barber"), and a comedy called "Machan", a film about a Sri Lankan handball team which is a true story about a false team! Films will be shown in the original languages either with voice overs or subtitles in French. English speakers are most welcome to join the club of course, it's not only a good opportunity to see interesting films and meet new people, but also it's a chance to practice and understand the French language a bit more outside of the classroom".   Jennifer Siegrist, a member of the programming committee continues: "The other advantage of this club is the possibility to see a style or genre of film that you wouldn't normally see in the mainstream cinema here in Nyon. We have a phrase in French - "A coté de la Plaque" (roughly translated - "off the wall"), some of these films fall into that category but they are all good and interesting films".  The club has a website with the full programme of  the coming up this season. For 90 chf per year, club members get to see 10 films, they also will have the advantage of a reduced price on tickets on the mainstream films  at the cinema (14chf instead of 16chf per ticket, apart from weekends and official holidays). Membership also includes one free ticket to one mainstream film at the cinema and an invitation to an Avant-Première film. Details of  membership are on the club's site or you can sign up at the cinema itself on the first screening on the 10th October. See site here Wikipedia entry on the film " The Artist" below. "The Artist" is a romance film directed by Michel  Hazanavicius, starring  Jean Dujardin  and  Bérénice Bejo . The story takes place in Hollywood between 1927 and 1931 and focuses on a declining male film star and a rising actress, as  silent cinema  grows out of fashion and is replaced by the  talkies . The film is itself a silent film and in black-and-white. Dujardin won the  Best Actor Award  at the  2011 Cannes Film Festival , where the film premiered. Semaine de la Mobilité - 16th - 22nd September - Try out an electric bike for free tonight!  Residents of Nyon may have seen posters around  the town advertising the Semaine de la Mobilité.  During this week there will be lots of events on offer to encourage the citizens of the town to get out of their cars and to use alternative  forms of  transport, not only for the benefit of the environment but also for their health!  The official opening of the week begins this evening  Friday 16th at 18:15 (at la Roulotte, the temporary café on the St Cergue side of the railway station). The next "Rencontre a la Page" encounter is in a series of events that occur throughout the year and which are held mainly in Nyon and Gland and part of La Page Cornée, a local literary events non-profit association. Their next event on Wednesday 19th March  is a "Crime and Mystery Novel Evening" in the presence of Mr Pierre Aepli  who was head of Vaudois police for 20 years. Mr Aepli is now a crime author and international security expert. Also present will be Mr Patrick Delachaux, ex policeman and author of "Flic de Quartier". Note: this event will be held in French, however many people in the group also speak English and the group welcome all nationalities.
