Expat Fair - Engineering work on railway - New flight to Inverness from Geneva The Léman International Fair will take place in Lausanne on Sunday November 13th. This fair is for expats, locals and Swiss residents. Full details here Engineering work on Railway 12/13 November There will be  engineering and maintenance work on the railway between Lausanne and Geneva airport during the weekend of the 12/13 November. Replacement buses will be operating every quarter of an hour during this time. For full details of the works and how it will affect your journey, click here Geneva Airport news In its recent published  November newsletter , Geneva airport has announced there will be a direct weekly Easyjet flight from Geneva to Inverness during the winter season. There will also be increased frequency of flights to Manchester and East Midlands with the airline Jet 2.

Every two years the International Women's Club of Nyon holds a big bazaar in the centre of Nyon. The bazaar is a great opportunity to buy second hand English books, DVDs and CDs  (there is always a very good selection!) and to stock up on toys, games, brocante, Christmas decorations and lots more, to have a coffee and cake or lunch and meet some new faces in the pop-up Bistro. This year's Bazaar will be held on Saturday the 12th November from 10:00 - 16:00  This bazaar raises thousands of francs for both Nyon and local charities and charities further afield. The bazaar is held in the Salle Communale in the centre of Nyon. If you are new to the area, this building is in the Place Perdtemps car park.

The Da Capo orchestra will be performing in three local venues in November: at the Catholic church in Nyon at 17:00 on the 13th, the Temple in Aubonne at 20:00 on the 10th and the Madeleine temple in Geneva at 20:00 on the 11th. This orchestra, under the musical direction of Ahmed Hamdy will be performing Concertone KV 190, Sinfonia N° 29 KV 201, Sinfonia concertante for violin and viola KV 364 by WA Mozart. Here is a selection of films showing at Nyon cinema from the 2nd - 8th November 2016. "I, Daniel Blake" screening in English (subtitles in French) every day at 18.30.  This film, directed by Ken Loach, won the prestigious Palme d'Or award at the Cannes film festival in 2016. On Tuesday November 8th there will be an American Election night event in Geneva, from 21:30 until 05:00! There will be live streaming news coverage, entertainment, games, refreshments, live music and a raffle on the night. The event is organised by the AENC Joint Committee of Geneva which incorporates the following organisations: American Citizens Abroad Geneva Chapter, The American International Club of Geneva, The American International Women's Club of Geneva, Democrats Abroad Switzerland and Republicans Overseas. This event is open to Americans and their friends. You do not need to be American to participate! It's Caves Ouvertes (open wine cellars) on Saturday the 5th and Sunday 6th November in the villages of Begnins, Luins, Vinzel and Luins. There will be wine tasting and an opportunity to taste "Le Bourru". This is the new wine at the end of its first fermentation. For just CHF 15, visitors can have access to all the wine cellars that are taking part in the weekend including the wine tastings too! There will also be a free "navette" (bus) that will leave Gland railway station to take visitors between the various cellars and a "petit train" will also be in operation.  Full details here   and in the video below (in French with English subtitles). La Roulotte, the old railway carriage behind Nyon station that operates as a café, usually opens in Spring and closes down in October, but this year, the staff have decided to keep the café going until Christmas! Blankets and candles will be provided at the tables for customers if it is particularly cold and hot meals and hot drinks will be served.

The covered ice rink has now opened in Nyon and will stay open until the 12th March 2017. This year the ice rink will open seven days a week. See the full schedule here There is also a buvette at the ice rink where customers can have a coffee or a fondue. There will be a workshop in Geneva entitled  Raising multilingual children : Foreign Language Acquisition and Children on Wednesday November 16 from 18:00 - 22:00. The workshop will be given by world-renowned specialist in education and neuroscience, Tracey Tokuhama-Espinosa, Ph.D. Tracey is half Japanese-American, half Irish-Native American and is married to an Ecuadorian. Her 3 children aged 24, 21 and 19 speak fluent English, Spanish and German and some French. Tracey Tokuhama-Espinosa, author of “Raising Multilingual Children” and five other books on the brain and learning, is visiting Switzerland to present her workshops. Tracey will explain how children learn languages and answer your questions such as: Is it ok to have 2, 3, 4 languages at the same time or is it better for children to learn languages consecutively? When should your children learn multiliteracy skills? Who should speak what in order to maximize the best language skills? Should you learn a foreign language alongside your children? Raising your child multilingually has worked so far, but now your child is growing up and you have different questions about identity, literacy, strategy, etc. Come with your own questions and be prepared to share your own concerns about the best way to raise multilingual children. Family entertainment Saturday and Sunday 15th and 16th October in Nyon  Plus Launch of Hen Coop in Coinsins! There will be a Usine à Gaz  theatre production for the young public which will take place under a tent by the lakeside (at the la grande jetée) in Nyon this Saturday 15th and Sunday 15th October. The production, by  Nicole et Martin  tells tales by Grimm, with music, acrobatics and theatre. Their shows have won awards at the the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and rave reviews from the press. Note: the shows are in French however there is lots of action and movement, so the stories can be easily understood!  Tickets here Photos above - courtesy Usine à Gaz Launch of New Hen Coop in Coinsins!  A whole-day festival (09:00-17:00) on Saturday 15 October in Coinsins near Nyon to inaugurate a mobile hen coop!  Organic farmers Francis and Marie Jaggi will be offering guided tours of their new hen coop, together with their stone-grinding wheel and oil press. The master baker, who makes the delicious bread from their stone-ground flour, will be there, as will a local winegrower and beer brewer. Refreshments available of course! Details here

A My Poste 24 hour terminal has recently been installed near Nyon railway station (just near the entrance to the Nyon St-Cergue railway entrance).  These terminals make it easy to send and receive parcels and registered letters around the clock. This is a great idea for those who find it difficult to get to the post office during working hours.  Registration with La Poste and a Swiss mobile number are both required to use the service. Lockers can also be rented as a handover location (for example) for products bought on online auction platforms.
