- Fight the Cold with the Cold
When winter settles in Nyon, we often find ourselves covered in a blanket of grey clouds feeling equally as gloomy. When in search for that energising winter sun we crave, what do we do... we head UP! Combine that with exciting winter activities that some of us wait all year round for, why wouldn't we get up into the mountains at every given chance? Well, the great thing about living in this region is that there are plenty of fun things to do that don’t need us to travel very far. One popular activity is cold water therapy, via lake swimming or as some like to call it ‘No way am I getting IN THERE’ swimming in Lac Leman. Paired with a session in the Sauna down by the lake, it is a fantastic activity for any age, solo or as a group. And the best thing about it is, it’s FREE! Cold Water Bathing Engaging in cold water exposure is said to not only give your physical and mental health a boost, but the immune system too. Now, as we enter the third year of the pandemic, we are making all efforts to keep our immune system strong, as best we can. The practice of cold water immersion may hold a part of that and has been around for hundreds of years in varying cultures and countries. Due to its growing awareness from the likes of Wim hof -Ice Man, more people are taking the plunge into ice cold waters hoping for improved sleep, boosted energy levels and reduced stress and inflammation, as well as other long term health benefits. How to get started? The simplest way, finish with a cold 30 second blast at the end of your shower. Or, for the braver among you switch out hot water altogether for an invigorating, cold shower. Then, once your body (and nerves!) have acclimatised, the natural progression would be to immerse yourself, at least once a week in an ice bath and even better, a lake. We are fortunate to be in close proximity to many stunning, crystal clear lakes in Switzerland. Not least Lac Leman with an average of a cool 6 ° C during winter. The picturesque Nyon plage offset by Mont Blanc and white capped mountains in the horizon, makes it the perfect place setting for a winter lake swim. You can understand why you often see bathers in the lake either alone or with friends; a tranquil way to pass a morning or afternoon. The Sauna If you are not quite ready to take the plunge without a ‘pre-game’ warm-up, there is the beautifully designed Sauna at Nyon plage. The cabin is cleverly positioned to give the impression of actually being in the water. With a private balcony overlooking the lake, it is an inviting sanctuary allowing you moments of warmth and calm before, and in between the two to three recommended dips into the cold water outside. It is an initiative created by the Association Des Bains de Trois Jetées and run by enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers creating spectacular winter moments of wellness guided by the lunar light. Ideal to do alone, but even better with friends to encourage you with a little peer pressure (the good kind) to jump in. Then finish it all off with a calming cup of tea in a cosy, fire lit room. The Sauna is open until April with some special events and early morning sauna sessions coming up. Check out their site for information on hours and prices. They are also raising funds for a new, bigger Sauna to continue spreading their winter magic in the future and would be delighted to receive donations. Happy Winter Swimming!

- International Women's Day 8th March
Celebrating International Women's Day today. Aglobal day honouring women, as well as raising awareness of their social, economic, cultural and political achievements. In 1914, March 8th officially became the date to mark International Women's Day. Fighting and rallying for equality, suffrage and bridging the gender pay gap are just some of the many issues women faced worldwide and continue to do so. Women in Switzerland were given the right to vote in 1971, relatively late in comparison with other countries in the Western World. With our neighbouring countries France giving suffrage in 1944, Germany in 1918 and Italy in 1945. And there is still much more work to do! These are not just 'women's issues' - they affect us all and it is important also to recognise that historically there are men who have played critical roles in the advancement of this movement and must still be included in conversations in the future. Women's groups in the region There are so many amazing women-led groups in the region - bringing them together and offering support. Here are just a few : International Women's Club of Nyon - bringing women together since 1987 Genuine Women Women Rock Switzerland Facebook Group Coffee and Bubbles Facebook Group Not forgetting all the wonderful mompreneurs who are raising their children and starting enterprises of their own. Often coming to Switzerland as the accompanying spouse. Living in Nyon was founded by Catherine Nelson-Pollard in 2009 and now three more women make up the team working on this site. We are all from different countries, backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities and that is our super strength. We wish you a very Happy Women's Day! Myrta, Mandy and Seema

- A mother's search for childcare brings a small community together.
Living in Switzerland with children in the local school system can be a shock for many parents who have not had the experience of the seemingly huge gap in the middle of the day. L unchtime. For both working and stay at home parents unaccustomed to having their children back home for almost two hours in the middle of the day, it brings up a crucial question... what to do about lunchtime? Child care The Swiss local system still generally relies on the assumption of having a stay-at-home parent. This can be tricky to navigate for parents in different situations already juggling work and other commitments. Those parents working locally with a company that encourages the two hour 'work-life balance' lunch or a support system to help, can find it easier to create a solution. There are options available; the after school program parascolaire , hiring au pairs or maman du jours , lunch-sharing, but these themselves come with their own set of challenges. Being low on the priority list, spaces available, costs. Add to that the long waiting list and options are limited. A possible solution In the beginnings of the pandemic in 2020, Nyon based Anouk Demper, mother to four girls in the local school system was struggling to find a new lunch solution. One that would accommodate all four of her children, now in different schools. A stay-at-home mum with a slim chance of getting into the parascolaire system that could cost her family up to 100CHF a day. She decided to take action into her own hands and do a little investigating and came across the exact solution she was looking for! Similar to what is run in her home country of Holland, a lunch club - Les Petits Midis, started in neighbouring Bursins and run by volunteers, and then another in Perroy . Where to begin? Anouk set about turning this already successful working model into a reality here in Nyon. Enlisting the help of friends and teachers to help write letters, put up flyers and create a business plan, she then approached the Nyon commune. Not sure of the response, to her delight the plan was warmly received and not only approved but supported. Les Petits Midis Nyon was born. Next steps... set it up as an Association, find a venue and volunteers to help run it, and bring it to life. How does it work? The LPM team will pick up and drop your child from school to the buvette they are renting from the Stade de Marens, home to FC Italia. They look after the children as they have their home-brought packed lunch (with an option to be heated) and offer fresh fruit, water and playtime indoor or outdoors. It is open to all - just become a member and register for the specific days you would like, and the trade-off? You volunteer for two lunchtimes per month (min). How to sign up? For more information and to register go to the LPM website. There is a 15CHF annual membership and the cost is 6CHF per day. Currently for children at the schools: École du Couchant , École des Tattes D'Oie 1P-6P and siblings in 7-8P at École du Cossy. Stuck at an appointment? LPM also run a dépannage service to all members and will pick up your child last minute if you are delayed. Unexpected Benefits As we have recently seen, plans can change in an instant - work status, parenting status, etc. The biggest draw to this lunch club is the flexibility. It also has a big social aspect too. Parents and kids alike who didn't know each other are forming friendships and building up community through volunteering. It has enriched the social life of the members, and the children have found new friends with whom they can play with after school, as this extended support network is being built. Future After a successful pilot year, LPM were given the green light for a second year. There is potential to adopt this scheme at different schools throughout Nyon as part of the Association. Get inspired by this project and think about how you, like Anouk, can make a change in your community. Reach out to people with an idea or proposal that you think could help improve the quality of life of your community but were hesitating to put forward. You will be surprised how open people are and how much they want you to succeed. Get in touch via email info@lespetitsmidis-nyon.ch with Les Petits Midis to sign up or for more information.
