St George's school is expanding

There's a big demand for places in International schools in the Lake Léman area, so for parents that are looking around at the schools available, here is some info on
St George's School in Switzerland. It has been in Montreux in Switzerland since 1927. It began as an exclusive all-girls boarding school and now the school has developed into an international co-ed day and boarding school catering for close to 500 students from 45 different countries aged between 3 and 18. The school offers the IB diploma, end of school certificate for US College entry, IGCSE and the opportunity to follow bi-lingual programmes in English and French. The school has just opened a new campus in Neuchatel for students aged 11 to 18.

Summer Camp

The school also operates a summer school with French and English as a Foreign Language taught in the mornings, and activities and excursions organised such as sailing, mountain climbing archery, walking and horse riding in the afternoon. The summer camp can cater for approximately one hundred boarders and as many day children whether they attend St George’s School during the year or not. See their site for more details.

Events in Nyon and competition to vote for best café terrace.

Competition launched by tourist office with prizes

The warm weather is here and it's great to be able to sit outside on a terrace at a café or restaurant and soak up the sun. We all have our favourite place to do this, but which is yours?

The tourist office in Nyon have just launched a competition for us all to vote for the "plus belle terrasse" (the most beautiful terrace) in Nyon. The votes will then go into a raffle to win gift vouchers ranging from 250 to 1,000 CHF to spend locally, and also for a three month subscription to La Côte newspaper. There will be prizes given to the two best terraces as voted by the general public and a jury. You can either vote online or cut out the coupon in today's La Côte and post it to the tourist office.

This Saturday it's the Saturday Spring market in Nyon with stalls, music, drummers, in various areas of the town, stands with artisanal goods, bouncy castle etc and the market is scheduled to be there until 18:00! Parking in Place Perdstemps is free for the first hour.

Inviting the neighbours over in Nyon

In Nyon this Tuesday 26 May, it's "Neighbour's Day" when we are all encouraged to invite our neighbours over for a drink to get to know them a bit better. This initiative has been going strong in Nyon for a few years now and many communities have been organising events from the small drinks party, to the larger events with barbecues and music.

You may have seen these posters in and around Nyon, or a flyer may have dropped in your letterbox. If your neighbourhood hasn't organised anything so far, why not invite a neighbour yourself? It can be just for an "apero", an event like this doesn't need a great deal of effort and is a great way of integrating into the area.

A politician and a king, both at the Château of Prangins

The politician is Paddy Ashdown who will be speaking on Tuesday, June 2nd at 19:30 about his autobiography, "A Fortunate Life", highlighting aspects of his varied career as former Royal Marine officer, British party political leader and as someone who held the post of UN High Representative in Bosnia from 2002-2006. See Executives International for details.

The king is Cymbeline, the protagonist in one of Shakespeare's lesser known comedies. This play will be performed in the courtyard of the château by Howard Productions from the 18-20 of June. The courtyard is a lovely venue for theatre productions, a perfect way to spend a summer's evening.

Château of Prangins

Don't forget that Caribana the first of the summer music festivals is only a couple of weeks away on the 10-14 June. See previous post for more info on this festival. There are still tickets available for the 11th when Editors & Travis will be playing, and the 12th (Stress & UB 40). This lake side setting in Crans is an idyllic place for music concerts, if you've never been before I thoroughly recommend you to give it a try.

Bird watching in Nyon and environs.

A big thankyou to keen ornithologist Mike Bowman for this post below. There are some interesting birds around this area and Mike has given us an insight into which ones can be seen and where to go to spot them. If you want to know more, Mike is available as a guide, or just as a source of information for anyone interested in bird watching, such as places to visit, how to choose binoculars etc. His details are at the end of the post.

Birdwatching in the Nyon area.

Have you thought about bird watching as a family activity? Its an excellent means of getting children out of the house and interested in the environment and outdoor activities. It can be anything from a leisurely stroll to a tough climb up into the mountains where the birds and the animals can be just an additional attraction.

Birdwatching at the Col de la Colombière in Haute-Savoie - Photo Mike Bowman

Because of its geographical position in Central Europe, Switzerland receives a wide variety of birds at different times of year and nearly 400 species have been seen, quite a few of which are not regularly found in the UK. Many migrating waders stop off along the shores of the lake on their way north to breed in the Arctic regions. The best place for seeing waders in April and May is the bird island at Prevérenges (see directions below).

At any time of year there is always something to be seen, in the Spring there are the many summer visitors mostly arriving from Africa. The Black Kites arrive in March from their winter quarters in West Africa and depart again at the end of July. Black Kites can be seen almost anywhere around the Lake Geneva area as they wheel around over the towns and villages. Who has not been charmed by the songs of thrushes, and warblers in the hedgerows too and watched the flight of swifts as they fly screaming between the houses?

In the winter, from December to March, there are numerous species of duck on the lake that have migrated south from their breeding quarters in the extreme north of Europe. They can be seen particularly in and around the port of Nyon where they become rapidly habituated to visitors and readily accept food, even the fish eating Common Mergansers, (the British call these Goosanders).

To know what birds are about in the area, check out this interesting site. It is an exchange platform about birding in Switzerland. It has a section with latest sightings of birds, it has photos of birds and it even lists sun set and sunrise times for the keen early risers.

You can contact Mike either by e-mail on mike.bowman@bluewin.ch or by phone on 079-2195059

You can often see other animals too when you are bird watching.

To get to Prevérenges

Directions: Leave Morges by the coast road in the direction of Lausanne and turn off to the right in Prevérenges towards the Aula. Park your car at the lakeside car park and walk to the left along the lake until you see the artificial island just before the point where the River Venoge enters into the lake. You will need binoculars for this however as the birds will be a little too far away for the naked eye.

Where to take children on rainy days in the Nyon area

The sun is shining right now and the weather just gorgeous. However, May can often be a rainy month here in Vaud, so here are some suggestions as to where to take children to play on inclement days, or where to leave them for a few hours if you need to shop.

A big thankyou to the Mums and Tots in IWCN (International Womens' Club of Nyon) for these tips and hints. It's not a comprehensive list, so if you know of somewhere new that's not on here, do let me know and don't forget, there's lots more info in the book Know it all Passport .

If if you don't want to venture out, then why not let them be creative with a craft kit from Castor Bleu to assemble at home. These kits are inexpensive and designed by a local business in Crans. See advert on the sidebar.
